University of Northern Iowa (UNI) CM Team headed to ABC National Competition

Six students and a faculty advisor from the UNI Construction Management program are currently prepping for the ABC National Construction Management Competition taking place during ABC Convention, March 20 – 23, 2018.

The UNI team will compete against other top construction management programs from across the country in the competition being held in Long Beach, CA.

ABC's Construction Management Competition (CMC) is the hallmark competition that promotes careers in construction management. In addition to providing a significant learning opportunity, the competition fosters an environment that will bring out the best in each team; encourage dialogue among the students; and foster the team spirit as students rise to meet this challenge. The CMC is designed to challenge construction knowledge, time management, organizational and presentation skills. The competition features teams of college and university students testing their project management, estimating, safety, quality control and presentation skills.

Representing UNI at this year’s competition will be:

  • Brett Steinkamp, Team Captain
  • Cole Kass
  • Will Poffenberger
  • Blake Wolinski
  • Garret Hotop
  • Joshua Phifer
  • Austin Maginnis, Faculty Advisor

The six students were selected for the 2018 competition team through a two-step process that involved responses to essay questions and in-person interviews with representatives of ABC of Iowa and members of the UNI Construction Management program faculty.  ABC of Iowa thanks K & W Electric, Inc. and Community Electric, Inc. for their support of this year’s UNI team at the ABC National CMC.

The Status of Apprenticeship in 2018

There are 833 registered apprenticeship programs in the state of Iowa, and ABC of Iowa has the largest construction apprenticeship-training program in the state! And... we're growing!

Shown Left: With a record year for Apprenticeship Training & Trust, in order to accommodate the increasing trend of apprentices, ABC of Iowa has broken ground on an expansion of our Grimes Training Center. This 8,000 sq ft addition includes 4 new classrooms and an additional 4,000 sq ft of hands-on lab space. This addition is scheduled to be ready for Fall 2018 classes.

Shown Right: Our Davenport location opened in February for classes and currently offers two classrooms and a hands-on training lab.

We held our annual legislative reception on February 6th. We host this event each year to give members the opportunity to network with state legislators in a casual environment. At the reception, members spoke with legislators about our top legislative priority this year – closing loopholes in the public bidding laws.

Several of our apprentices also attended the event this year to help highlight the importance of the state’s support of apprentice training.

Prior to the reception, the ABC of Iowa Board of Directors went to the Capitol for meetings with the House and Senate leaders to discuss the importance of passing our public bidding legislation.

We will be holding an additional event for legislators this year. On March 27, we will have our Career Exploration Trailer parked outside the capitol for legislators to tour. We look forward to using this department to further educate legislators about our training program. We invite you to stop by the Capitol from 11-1, at the bottom of the west steps.
