2018 - 06 - graduation recap

On the note of growth, it's time to give another update on the construction of our ABC of Iowa Training Center in Grimes.

The 8,000 sq ft addition, which includes 4 new classrooms and an additional 4,000 sq ft of lab space, is scheduled to be ready for Fall 2018 classes.

Please join us for an afternoon of comradery and an opportunity to test your shooting skills while networking with other members, your ABC of Iowa board, staff and associates as we come together in support of our political advocacy.

The ABC of Iowa State PAC is hosting a sporting clay shoot competition. You can put together your own team of four, or register just yourself and have us pair you with others. Each team of four will go through a series of 10 stations, totaling 100 targets. Beginners and sharpshooters are welcome!

The cost to participate is $275/player. This includes targets, shells, lunch and beverages!

Lunch and registration starts at 12:00. The competition starts at 1:00 and will wrap up around 3:30. We will have a short award ceremony at the end for the winners.

You can register online or print this flyer and mail your registration to ABC of Iowa with a check.

Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion: Update on Final Report and Other Significant Apprenticeship Issues

1:00 p.m. (CT)
60 minutes
Speakers: Michael D. Bellaman, ABC National & Greg Sizemore, ABC National

On Oct. 6, 2017, Michael D. Bellaman, president and CEO of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), was appointed by U.S. Department of Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta to the Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion, created by President Trump’s June 15 Executive Order 13801.

ABC served on two of the four task force subcommittees—those charged with attracting business to apprenticeship and expanding access, equity and career awareness. The subcommittees offered numerous recommendations, which were detailed in the final apprenticeship report issued on May 10.

Some of the recommendations in the final report include:

  • Expansion of work-and-learn models
  • National recognition and portability of credentials
  • Strategies for affordability
  • Greater industry and employer involvement
  • Streamlined program funding
  • Focus on areas of most acute skills shortage
  • Raise apprenticeship awareness
  • Eliminate operational inefficiencies
  • Implement industry-recognized apprenticeship programs

Michael Bellaman and Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of HSE and workforce development, will provide an overview of the final apprenticeship report and discuss other significant apprenticeship issues impacting merit shop contactors.

Who should attend:

Senior-level managers

ABC chapter presidents, attorneys and staff

What Happens When You're Gone?

1:00 p.m. (CT)
60 minutes
Speakers: Viewpoint

You have worked hard over the years to build a successful company and have worn every hat along the way. You have also hired some very talented people to manage projects and provide other technical expertise. However, while talented, these people do not always have the business acumen to manage the financial, marketing and human capital elements that are critical to running a complex construction company. The most successful managers of the future will have developed strong management, leadership and business skills in order to keep your business legacy growing.

Join Michael Mangum of FMI, a leading expert on contractor succession planning, for a 1-hour online training. Michael will provide some basics of the framework he uses to help his consulting clients prepare for the day when they are no longer running the day-to-day operations of their construction businesses.
