November 2017

Thank you for joining us once again this month for your important member updates. There are so many opportunities for our members this month. Read on, and let us know if you have any questions!

This month we celebrate the 3rd Annual National Apprenticeship Week, from November 13-17. Learn more about this below!

In the spirit of National Apprenticeship Week, we will be featuring opportunities for you to learn more about how our Apprenticeship Training program has created valuable careers in the lives of thousands of past apprentices. Keep an eye out for this during the week of November 13-17!

On October 10th
, Governor Kim Reynolds joined us for the ABC of Iowa Hiawatha Open House. The Governor started her visit with a tour of the newly completed facilities and experienced our multi-media, virtual-reality, Trades Exploration Trailer. She also took the time to visit with members and local apprentices before she presented a Proclamation for Careers in Construction Month.

Coming up on December 8th, ABC of Iowa is proud to be offering our Craft Championships competition where apprentices from all around the state of Iowa compete for a chance to advance to the National Competition. The event is an outstanding opportunity for apprentices to showcase their knowledge, skills and talents while practicing correct safety practices and procedures.

This same day, we are giving high school students a chance to experience the trades during our High School Challenge and Career Day. High schools are invited to enter students or teams of students for competitions in Carpentry, Electrical and Welding, and/or to visit the Career Day booths featuring the fantastic career opportunities in the Skilled Trades.

For more information, click here.

If you are interested in having the Trades Exploration Trailer (featuring virtual reality) at your local High School, please reach out to Ginny Shindelar at 515-985-1175.

On October 16, U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta appointed Governor Kim Reynolds Monday to serve on the President’s Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion. The creation of this task force is a key step in implementing President Trump’s executive order, which was signed on June 15, 2017, with the intent to expand apprenticeships and vocational education, close the skills gap and reduce regulatory burdens on workforce development programs.

We are proud to have a Governor focused on the importance of Apprenticeship.

STEP (Safety Training Evaluation Process)
Safety is everyone’s priority, and improving jobsite safety is a continuous process that ABC member companies work at every day. That’s why ABC created the STEP – which recognizes ABC member companies who consistently excel in the field of safety. Each year, over 2,000 contractors across the country participate in the STEP program.

34 Members were awarded with STEP certificates this year. 18 of the STEP winners were in attendance at our 29th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards Gala, which took place October 26th at Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino. To view photos from the Awards Ceremony, click here.

These companies have used STEP to evaluate and build upon already stellar safety programs and become leaders in training and incident prevention. To learn more about STEP, click here.
