The dual-sensor smoke detector law, IAC 661-210 was set to become effective October 1, 2009. The law requires all newly constructed residential properties in the State of Iowa to be equipped with smoke detectors that have both photoelectric and ionization sensors. Existing homes do not need to have the detectors changed out if they meet the manufacturer’s recommendationsfor use, installation and life expectancy. However when it is time to replace smoke detectors in existing homes, they must be replaced with the dual-sensor (photoelectric and ionization) detectors. Once the dwelling is equipped with dual-sensor smoke alarms where required by code, single-station ionization or photoelectric smoke alarms may be installed in addition, separately.
