Des Moines, Iowa – Twenty-seven Iowa companies were recognized today for extraordinary support of their employees who serve in the military. The companies, including large and small private employers as well as public employers were recognized by the Iowa Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Members of the Iowa Committee for ESGR presented the awards at the annual Iowa ESGR conference.
Three companies were awarded Pro Patria awards, which recognize employers that provide the most exceptional support of our national defense through leadership practices and personnel policies in support of National Guard & Reserve employees. Those companies include: Decker Truck Lines, The Printer, Inc., and Iowa State Patrol Post 14.
Twenty-one companies received Above & Beyond Awards, which recognize employers that exceed the law governing employment practices for employees who serve in the Guard & Reserve. Three employers received State Chairman Awards. (List of companies is below). The two ABC of Iowa members receiving awards are highlighted in yellow.
“We are proud to recognize all of these companies,” said Barry Spear, Iowa ESGR chairman, in presenting the awards. “What our members of the Guard and Reserve do is so important. Those men and women would not be able to perform their service as well without the support of employers like the ones we recognized today.”
These Iowa employers join with thousands of American employers who have reviewed and amended their current human resources policies to ensure compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Many employers provide extraordinary support with pay differential to offset the loss of wages, and extension of health care benefits which complement coverage provided by the military when their employees are mobilized.
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense volunteer organization. ESGR's goal is to support America's employers who share their employees with the nation to ensure our national security. ESGR provides free education, consultation, and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve employees. ESGR is comprised of volunteers from all areas of the State of Iowa.
