On the note of growth, it's time to give another update on the construction of our ABC of Iowa Training Center in Grimes.

The 8,000 sq ft addition, which includes 4 new classrooms and an additional 4,000 sq ft of lab space, is scheduled to be ready for Fall 2018 classes.

ABC's Competitive Bidding Bill Signed into Law
On April 4th, Governor Reynolds signed HF 2253 into law. Going forward, public entities will have to competitively bid projects that are financed through a lease-purchase agreement. Because public entities are ultimately the owners of these buildings, we did not think it was appropriate that they be exempted from the public bidding law. We are thankful that legislators and the Governor agreed.

The legislative session is starting to wind down, and the focus is now on reaching a budget agreement. The House and Senate are also working on a tax reform deal. We are hopeful that they will be able to pass a tax reform bill that is beneficial to our members.

ABC of Iowa is incredibly proud to share that our 44-year-member-company ACI Mechanical, Inc. was named Associated Builders and Contractors' 2017 Contractor of the Year, an award that recognizes companies for their corporate integrity, commitment to safety, professional development and expert craftsmanship.

President Mike McCoy accepted the honor at the Excellence in Construction ceremony during ABC National Convention 2018. ABC National Chair George R. Nash Jr., director of preconstruction at Branch & Associates in Herndon, Va, stated “This full-service, design-build contractor stands above the rest with a significant investment in its workforce, an impressive safety record and a commitment to understanding and adopting the latest industry technology. Mentoring, teaching and continuing education have been a primary focus for the company since it first opened its doors in 1945.”

McCoy, ABC of Iowa's current treasurer, has served as a chapter chair, chapter board member, chair of the training trust and chair of the chapter development committee. On the ABC National level, he has served on the Board of Trustees and is a past chair and current member of the National Chapter Development Committee. Not shy of politics, he has proudly represented the interests of his employees and the needs of his industry at the Iowa Statehouse and attended political events in Washington, D.C., to defend and support open shop construction.

According to President Mike McCoy, “ABC, as a volunteer-driven organization, is all about what you put into it. The more you put into it, the more you’re going to get out of it."

We are thankful for all you do for ABC of Iowa!

Completing An OSHA Form 300

OSHA has been examining the OSHA logs much more thoroughly - make sure you have all your information listed correctly and pay close attention to Column F.

ABC of Iowa strongly recommends that member companies look at Column F for any injury or illness they have filled in earlier on Form 300, and ensure that they are following the rules of Column F.  It states to “Describe injury or illness, parts of body affected, AND object/substance that directly injured or made person ill”.

The key point is including both pieces of information for the last 5 years of reports that OSHA can and will ask you for. You can amend any year to improve the documentation. These forms are due on July 1st, 2018.

Who does this impact? Each company with 10+ employees must fill this out annually. Companies over 20 employees must electronically fill out their data from 2017 at this website.
