August 2018

2018 - 08 - Header

Dog Days of Summer!

We're already breaking into August, which means plenty of sun, heat and humidity.

Safety is key at all times on the construction site, and even more so with the summer heat at its peak. We want to help you create a culture of safety.

Have you taken advantage of the FREE Safety Evaluation Training Process? If you haven't, finalize your evaluation by Wednesday at 11:59pm. You'll get instant results, and a member of our safety team will be there to support your efforts!

We are excited to announce the launch of our newest support tool. The first-ever Members-Only Safety Forum, an online discussion site where our members can connect with our safety directors and council 24/7 to find support for your questions and concerns, and where you can find exclusive materials and content to increase your safety!

For members looking for in-person training, visit the Safety page at abciowa.org/safety for information on training contracts.

All this and more below! Happy August!

2018-19 Registration Closing Soon

The deadline to register apprentices for the 2018-19 school year is Wednesday, August 8th. For more information, click here.

ABC of Iowa is the largest construction apprenticeship training program in the state of Iowa, and we are proud to have finished the 2017-18 school year with more than 1,400 apprentices, the most in our 42 year history.

Grimes Training Facility Nearing Completion

Exterior work is complete on the Grimes Training Facility, and interior work is coming together nicely. The 8,000 sq ft addition, which includes 4 new classrooms and an additional 4,000 sq ft of lab space, is scheduled to be ready for Fall 2018 classes.

ABC of Iowa PAC

2018 is a big election year with a competitive race for Governor, so raising State PAC funds continues to be a priority for ABC of Iowa PAC. Here's a look at how we are achieving our goals:

Sporting Clay Shoot
On Thursday, July 12, the PAC held its first-ever Sporting Clay Shoot fundraiser, offering our members an opportunity to connect and test their shooting skills in the summer sunshine, and sunny it was!

PAC Phone Drive

On Wednesday, July 29, the ABC of Iowa Board of Directors kicked off our annual State PAC phone drive before the July board meeting, calling their liaison companies requesting support for our political efforts. If you haven't already, please expect a call from your member liaison or Sandra Conlin, Director of Government Affairs.

If you want to make a donation now, you can submit online, here. Please submit by Monday, August 20. We truly appreciate any level of support that you can give!

Family Fun Night At The Ballpark

Friday, July 20th was the perfect evening to celebrate summer, membership and Iowa Cubs baseball with our members and their friends and family, and the weather couldn't have been better.

2018 - 08 - familyfunnight

Registered members met up in the Hy-Vee Mezzanine for a grill out prior to the game against the New Orlean Baby Cakes, where Membership Director, Jared Harridge, gave the first pitch.

We had a great group - thanks to all who attended! We hope to see you all at our next family and friends event!

A Record-Breaking Year

We were thrilled to see the number of project intent to competes that were submitted to our 30th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards competition. This will be our largest Awards Gala to date! Thank you so much to all who submitted!

If your company submitted an intent to compete (or several) during this time, the next step is to complete your official project submission. Project submissions are due by Friday, August 17, 2018 at 11:59 p.m.

A Proven Solution to the Skilled Trade Shortage
Date: Tuesday, August 21, 2018
Time: 9 a.m. EST
Length: 60 Minutes
Speaker: TBD

WEBINAR DESCRIPTION
As the challenges to find experienced heavy industrial and commercial trades escalate, more and more contractors are incorporating contract labor into their staffing strategies. These contractors are treating staffing firms as extensions of their internal HR operations and have, as a result, optimized project work-to-worker ratios, and bottom lines.

Learn how firms such as Tradesmen International are able to deliver 10, 40, upwards of 300 hard-to-find trades – i.e., welders, turbine mechanics, licensed electricians, pipefitters – to client jobsites even as the labor shortage looms large.

Find out why highly skilled, safety-minded craftsmen are choosing to work for staffing services. And, why it’s likely your impression of the staffing services of the 2000’s may be holding you back from effectively and efficiently meeting your manpower needs.
