Robert W. Shaw is Named
2008 CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR
The Larry Meisner Contractor of the Year Award is presented to an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Iowa member who through his or her performance has achieved significant accomplishments for the construction industry, merit shop and ABC of Iowa. The 2008 Contractor of the year was awarded to Robert W. Shaw, President & CEO of Shaw Electric, Inc., Davenport.
Shaw has been an ABC of Iowa member for 24 years and in the industry for 30 years.
While in his teens, he began working for his father. Shaw’s strong belief in employee personal development is evident when he provides the opportunity and financing for participation in Dale Carnegie courses, leadership training and continuing education including journeyman and apprenticeship training.
Many individuals have benefited from Shaw’s long tradition of sponsoring an apprenticeship training program in conjunction with ABC of Iowa.
Servant leadership is another characteristic that makes Shaw stand out above the rest. His efforts form a cohesive team that have resulted in several project managers being with the company over 15 years, office staff with an average tenure of 13 years and 16 electricians who have been with the company for 10 years or more.
Shaw’s belief in giving back to his community and this definition of community is truly world-wide. He supports his industry by serving his city’s electrical board and serving on the ABC of Iowa board of directors. Shaw has achieved Beam Club Member status for his active member recruitment to the Iowa chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors.
He has been selected by the Davenport Diocese of the Catholic Church to begin the church’s ordained Deacon Training Program. Shaw also supports the efforts of the local Habitat for Humanity and Adopt-A-Family Programs. Last year his family traveled to Uganda on the continent of Africa participating in a ministries program helping build a community center while teaching the residents basic electrical skills.
Shaw and his family were recently recognized as a “Patriotic Employer” for their active involvement of the employer support of the guard and reserve program.
