ABC was founded on the belief of the Merit Shop Philosophy. Our members are united in their commitment to the ideals of free enterprise and to the idea that a construction job should be given to the lowest qualified bidder.
Merit shop employers are not opposed to organized labor. They believe in their right to do business with whomever they choose--union or open shop.
ABC contractors believe strongly in their right to manage their companies and job sites free of coercion and artificial restraints. They believe workers should be hired and paid on the basis of individual merit.
In a word, the Merit Shop Philosophy is rooted in the principle of freedom--freedom of the contractor to engage in fair competition, making the most of the capital and effort he or she has invested, and freedom of the employee to realize his or her full potential in the workforce.
